Proprietary laptop battery packs can cost 100 a pack however one company has come out with a Linux based Laptop computer which is available for only 200 dollars and can run off of AA Batteries. Norhtec’s Gecko EduBook can run off of 8 NiMH
There are cheaper Laptops but this laptop does provide a 1ghz processor. Which may not be extremely fast but it does provide performance above other offerings that are cheaper but only provide a 400 mhz processor. Not everyone is interested in going extremely minimalist, so if you are looking for something in between the fastest and the slowest a product somewhere in the middle of the two this could be an item worth looking into.

These are absolutely pointless. The processor in these is weaker than an iPod touch! Not to mention, they tend to have 4 GB SSD’s. WHAT ARE THOSE GOOD FOR?
Let’s wait for manufacturers to actually start making useful compact computers.

If only an iphone-like device could run off of 4 AA batteries, ugh…

You are confused with the Chines branded CPUs such as Xblast. The EduBook is a 1ghz X86 CPU an can run Windows XP, Ubuntu 7.04, 8.10, 9.04 , 9.10, Debian 4, 5, WattOS, Puppy 4.3.1, Jolicloud, Mint 8.0 and others. The iPOD touch only runs its own OS and certainly can’t support onboard flash, do complex word processing, presentations, and run a sophisticated graphics package like GIMP.
Check out some recent reviews and you wills see the EduBook is not one of the useless non standard 7 inch screens from China but rather a fully funcitional low cost laptop that is low priced, energy efficient and well built.

For someone traveling, with minimal access to power to recharge the batteries, this is a boon. One class of users that would benifit are bicycle tourists. I wish more manufacturers would follow suite so there would me more choices. AA batteries are available anywhere. If you have multiple electronic devices it makes sense to standardize on a single type of battery for all your devices. Then you can carry one charger for everything, instead of s charger for every device you’re carrying.

The strategy applied by Google to sell the phones might be the reason behind less number of sales. Google launched its Nexus One mobile in January and decided to sell it through its own online store instead of selling it to other networks.

I think that now it is a clear difference, made not only by performance, but by price as well. It is difficult to have the performance of a desktop into a laptop computer. But if you aim for portability, you definitely have to choose a laptop.

I’m glad someone finally made a netbook that can run on AAs. I wonder if they could incorporate a NiMH charger within the laptop. It would be nice if it would charge the batteries without having to remove them. I also wonder how much battery life it gets.

It is rather aggravating and frustrating to have your MP3 player or mobile phone hang up on you while you are in the middle of a journey, call or task. Imagine if the GPS system seems to lose its power and turning off just when you need its guidance. The advancements in technology have provided us quite a few handy and also modern looking gadgets and while doing so they have made all of us extremely dependent on these types of portable gadgets having portable power capabilities.
